Women’s and men’s basketball sweep Queens and Kings
Women
Ending 2025 with a 4-6 record, the Trojans women’s basketball team looked to start the new year strong with two back-to-back games against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens this past weekend.
Game 1 took place Friday, Jan. 9, at the SAIT Bubble in Calgary.
The first quarter was close, with the home side holding a 21-18 lead.
By halftime, the Trojans led 40-22, allowing just four points from the Queens in the second quarter.
From there, the Trojans cruised to a 78-51 victory Friday night.
Trojans veteran Kitawna Sparks led the game with an impressive 30-point, 11-rebound double-double to earn player of the game honours.
The two teams met again the following night in Red Deer.
After scoring just two points in the first quarter and eight in the second, the Queens trailed 45-10 at halftime.
The remainder of the game belonged to the Trojans, who secured an 85-36 victory.
With the back-to-back wins, the Trojans sit in a three-way tie for second place in the ACAC women’s basketball standings with a 6-6 record.
Next up is a city rivalry game against the St. Mary’s University Lightning on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 6 p.m. in Calgary, followed by a rematch Friday at 6 p.m. at the SAIT Bubble.
Men
The Trojans men’s basketball team continued its perfect season over the weekend.
On Friday, Jan. 9, the Trojans faced the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings at the SAIT Bubble.
At halftime, the Trojans led 53-21 before cruising to a 98-42 win.
Marcus Masters led the game in scoring, posting 26 points to earn player of the game honours.
Both teams travelled to Red Deer for a rematch the following night.
The Trojans were once again dominant on both ends, scoring 50 points in the first half and allowing just 11 points in the third quarter en route to a 96-58 victory.
Masters again led the Trojans with 18 points.
Improving to 12-0 on the season, the Trojans remain the only undefeated team in the ACAC men’s basketball standings.
Next for the Trojans is a matchup against the Lightning on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m. at St. Mary’s University in Calgary, followed by a rematch Friday night at 8 p.m. at the SAIT Bubble.
Women’s hockey
The Trojans women’s hockey team looked to bounce back in its first games of 2026.
The weekend opened with a road game against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Friday, Jan. 9, in Medicine Hat.
Trojans rookie Anna Kapocsi opened the scoring halfway through the first period with an unassisted power-play goal.
After a scoreless second period, Kapocsi added her second of the night eight minutes into the third to make it 2-0.
With six minutes remaining, Rattlers forward Bree Purcell scored a power-play goal to cut the lead to one.
Gracie Soderstrom tied the game with nine seconds remaining to force overtime.
The Trojans prevailed in a shootout to claim a 3-2 victory.
On Saturday, the Trojans hosted the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens at WinSport Arena in Calgary.
Kapocsi scored her third goal in two games midway through the second period, with assists from Korie McGill and Lily Roberts.
The Queens tied the game four minutes later on a goal from Tasha Barsby, sending the game into the third period tied 1-1.
First-year forward Gabriella Meier scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third, which stood as the game-winner in a 2-1 Queens victory.
With a win and a loss on the weekend, the Trojans remain last in the ACAC women’s hockey standings with a 4-11 record.
Next are back-to-back games against the Queens, beginning Friday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. in Red Deer, followed by a rematch Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at WinSport Arena.
Women’s volleyball drop two straight, men extend losing streak to eight games
Women
Ending 2025 on a two-game skid, the Trojans women’s volleyball team looked to start the new year strong with back-to-back matches against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.
The Queens hosted the Trojans Friday, Jan. 9, in Red Deer.
The Trojans dropped the opening set 25-20.
The Queens claimed the next two sets 26-24 and 25-19 to secure a 3-0 victory.
Mia Delaquis led the Trojans offence with 10 kills on 24 attempts.
The teams met again Saturday at Rally Pointe in Calgary.
Once again, the Queens took the opening set 25-19.
The second set was a back-and-forth contest, with the Queens edging out a 33-31 win.
On home court, the Trojans responded by winning the next two sets 25-23 and 29-27 to force a fifth.
The Queens pulled away in the deciding set, winning 15-7 to take the match 3-2.
With the two losses, the Trojans are tied for third in the ACAC women’s volleyball standings with a 6-5 record.
Next are two matches against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Friday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. in Medicine Hat, followed by a rematch Saturday at 6 p.m. at Rally Pointe.
Men
The Trojans men’s volleyball team opened the weekend Friday, Jan. 9, against the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings in Red Deer.
The teams split the opening two sets, with the Kings winning the first 25-19 and the Trojans taking the second 25-22.
After winning the third set 25-20, the Trojans saw the Kings respond with a 25-18 fourth-set victory to force a fifth.
In the deciding set, the Kings pulled out a 15-12 win to take the match 3-2.
Brandon Burnside and Caua Alves de Carvalho led the Trojans offence with 12 kills each.
The rematch Saturday at Rally Pointe was controlled by the Kings, who swept the Trojans 25-19, 25-22 and 25-19.
With the back-to-back losses, the Trojans remain last in the ACAC men’s volleyball standings with a 2-9 record.
Next are two matches against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Friday, Jan. 23, at 8 p.m. in Medicine Hat, followed by a rematch Saturday at 8 p.m. at Rally Pointe.
